Review: Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed

Topic: Reviews

The original Destroy All Humans turned the tables on the usual sci-fi action games by let you play as the aliens, taking on the most feared enemy in the universe: humanity.

Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed is the third game in the series; set in the '70s, the aliens use the "Big Willy" restaurant chain as a front for the next nefarious scheme. When Big Willy's chief competitor learns the secret ingredient in Big Willy's menu, it's up to you as the alien to... welll... destroy all humans.

How do you destroy the humans? Three ways: as an alien, as a UFO, and as the pilot of the giant Big Willy mascot/robot. The wanton chaos and mindless destruction are definitely guilty pleasures. And, as you can guess from the concept, the humor in this game is a little twisted, sometimes even sophmoric--so if you're not a fan of puerile humor and double entendres, be forewarned. That said, when the game pokes fun at the '70s or its own gameplay, the jokes are more clever than cheesy.

The game uses the Wii Remote and, frankly, is a little awkward at first. The lead alien, Crypto, uses the control stick and pointer. However, Crypto's UFO and the Big Willy mascot/robot handle differently; you need to rotate the Wii Remote to turn them and use the control stick to move them along the X and Y axis. It can get confusing at times, but it's manageable.

The real fun in this game is the Big Willy robot: tossing cars around and stomping on tiny humans is definitely a good way to relieve some stress.

Peter Fernandez talks "Speed Racer"

Topic: Hollywood

We recently had the chance to talk to the voice of the original “Speed Racer” (and lyricist for the original "Speed Racer" theme song) Peter Fernandez about his history with the “Speed Racer” franchise and some of the most memorable moments of his career.  Fernandez is playing Spritle in Speed Racer: The Next Generation, a new animated half hour TV series that will air on the Nicktoons Network.  He also makes an appearance in the live action film that hits theatres on May 9 (which is extremely cool-looking, we might add).

So, you were just at ComicCon. What is it like interacting with “Speed Racer” fans?

Well, its always hectic at ComicCon.  I signed some new manga books that just came out.  All of the fans are great – a few years ago in California, I met a man who said that he was inspired by “Speed Racer.”  I asked him what he was doing and he was a design engineer for the Ford Motor Company.  I’ve had a couple of helicopter pilots who have said the same thing.  I had a man whose adult son who cried the whole time he talked to me!

Tell us about “Speed Racer: the Next Generation.”

It takes place 35 years or so after the original series.  I play the part of Spritle, Speed’s son.  He doesn’t know where his father is.  He was the little kid in the original series, and now he’s the 40 year old headmaster of a driving school.

Did they keep your theme song?

They do a new one that’s sort of similar, but not as catchy. (laughs)

How did you feel about being approached by Warner Bros. for the live action movie?

I was thrilled to be asked.  They kept pretty close to the original characters.  John Goodman, my goodness, he looks just like Pops.  The Wachowski brothers [the writers and directors of “Speed Racer”] said that when they were kids, they were big fans and would run home from school to catch “Speed Racer,” so they tried to keep close to the original.

“Speed Racer” was probably the first successful anime franchise in the US.  What do you think was appealing to US audiences?

One aspect is that all kids play with cars.  And here’s a show that’s all about cars.  It was the first series, one of the few ever, that had family values in it.  It was centered around a family that was involved in every part of the story.

Do you prefer working in television, film, or radio?

Radio.  First of all, you can do anything in radio.  The set [of the story] is in everyone’s mind.  It’s a different set for everyone listening.  You can do anything with your voice.  There were marvelous scripts [for radio] that were adapted into films and plays and other such things.

Do you prefer acting or writing?

I used to prefer writing, but now I’m kind of torn.  Writing is harder than acting.  They are both challenging in different ways.  Being a writer, you also get to direct.

What were some of the biggest challenges or most memorable moments of your career?

One of the biggest challenges to any actor is keeping working.  You go on many auditions, you’re lucky to get a job.  I’ve had some marvelous experiences in the business.  I was in a play when I was 14 years old for President Roosevelt’s birthday.  Afterwards, we had dinner at the White House.  He wanted us to sit at his table.  I was lucky enough to sit across from President Roosevelt!

Distinguishing Personality Traits:

bladesmybaby says, "Blade is a 2 1/2 years old Border Collie.  I bought him when I lived in the UK when he was 7 weeks old.  I brought him back at 9 months old to the States.  He is the most loving and playful dog I have ever owned.  His life consist of playing from dawn to dusk.  There is nothing he won't try to pick up and bring to you.  If he is able to lift it and carry it, you will have it at your feet.  Most of the time he acts stuck up to other dogs and doesn't even notice them unless he feels the need to.  He stays focused on his toys. Once a cat came up to him and he never paid any attention to it except that the cat walked in between him and the toy.  Then he just walked around the cat to get back to his toy.  No interest in the cat what-so-ever!  It's all about playing to him, no matter what!"

Question of the day: Horoscopes - Helpful or Hogwash?

Topic: Random

Most people at least glance at their daily horoscope online or in the newspaper, but some people truly believe that our astrological signs inform our personalities. Personally, I find that my temperament is too perfectly Taurean to discount power of Zodiac signs completely. But take that with a grain of salt - I also pay a lot of attention to the messages in my fortune cookies.

How seriously do you take astrology?  Do you believe that there is truth to horoscopes or are they completely random? Tell us what you think in the comments!

It's Earth Day - Save the Planet!

Topic: Random

It's Earth Day!  To celebrate, we all walked miles and miles over the highway and through the woods to Gamesville HQ this morning instead of taking our cars. (Some of us still haven't made it yet.  We're a little concerned.)  Why don’t you take today as an opportunity to add some more environmentally conscious habits to your daily routine?  Here are a few you can try:

1.    Print less!  Sometimes at work, we fall into the routine of constantly printing out and filing all of our documents, but its certainly greener (and sometimes easier) to simply save things electronically.
2.    Turn things off!  This seems like an obvious one, but how often do you leave the TV on when you are not watching it?  Or leave your cell phone charger plugged in even when your phone is not charging?  You can save a lot of energy just by only using the power you need when you need it.
3.    Reuse things!  Bring your own canvas sack to the supermarket (some stores, like Trader Joe’s, sell bags you can use), use mugs instead of disposable cups for your coffee, and open presents carefully so as to reuse the wrapping paper.  (Hey, you can even re-gift if you want.  We won’t tell.)
4.    Don’t speed!  Not only will it make you a more pleasant driver with whom to be on the road, but you’ll save fuel.
5.    In fact, don’t drive!  Why bother to go anywhere when you could be playing games and winning cash prizes on Gamesville?  Just try not to leave the computer on for too long after you win the Magic 21 Jackpot.

Welcome Back, X-Files!

Topic: Hollywood

Some of us at Gamesville HQ were big fans of "The X-Files" in the 90s.  (Some of us may even currently have bronze statuettes of Mulder and Scully on our bookshelves and Mulder's "I Want to Believe" poster hanging in our cubes ... okay, that would be me.)

Anyway, the sequel to the first "X-Files" movie, which came out in 1998, will be in theaters this July 25.  Eeee! I hope Mulder and Scully kiss again!

The movie has just been given a title:  "The X-Files: I Want to Believe."

I just want to believe the movie will be good.   Any other fans out there?

Here is the trailer to the original (and totally awesome) "X-Files" movie:
