Weird Wire: Japan Fines Companies for Overweight Employees

Topic: Weird Wire™

Here at Gamesville HQ, we can munch on free candy, soft drinks, and salty snacks all day ...  which can admittedly be bad for one's waistline. Well, it's a good thing we're not in Japan, where gaining a few pounds at work can cause a company to be fined.

From the article:

Under a national law that came into effect two months ago, companies and local governments must now measure the waistlines of Japanese people between the ages of 40 and 74 as part of their annual checkups. That represents more than 56 million waistlines, or about 44 percent of the entire population.
To reach its goals of shrinking the overweight population by 10 percent over the next four years and 25 percent over the next seven years, the government will impose financial penalties on companies and local governments that fail to meet specific targets. The country’s Ministry of Health argues that the campaign will keep the spread of diseases like diabetes and strokes in check.
Will office workers start doing crunches under their desks?

Bingo Zone Booster Club Singing Competition

Topic: New Features

Love to sing?  Who doesn't?  Well, tune up your vocal chords because we are offering a whopping 25,000 GV Rewards to anyone who records himself or herself singing the Bingo Zone Booster Club Theme Song (to the tune of "Bingo," obviously) and sends it to us at members@gamesville.com.

But it doesn't stop there!  If we like your rendition the best of all, we will award you first place, feature you on the site, and give you 500,000 GV Rewards.  If we choose you as one of our two runners-up, we will give you 250,000 GV Rewards.

Oh, and if you send us a video of yourself singing?  We will double the offer.  That means, yes, 1 MILLION GV REWARDS for the Grand Prize Winner.

And no, your voice does not have to be perfect.  The more personal flair you add to the song, the better!

You can find the lyrics to the song here.

Question of the Day: What's Your Favorite High School-Themed Movie?

Topic: Random

Some of Hollywood's most memorable movies take place in high school.  From "Rebel Without a Cause" to " "10 Things I Hate About You" high school movies can portray timeless depictions of what it's like to grow up - both the horrors and the hilarity.  So, for today's question of the day, I ask, what is your all-time favorite high school movie?

For me, nothing beats "The Breakfast Club"  with the archetypal brain, athlete, basket case, princess, and criminal.

R.I.P. Yogi Bear

Topic: Weird Wire™

Apparently some dark times have overtaken Yogi Bear and his family.  Check out this creepy array of decaying fiberglass statues.  We know we had tears in our eyes when we saw this.

On the bright side, your picnic basket will be safe.

Distinguishing Personality Traits:

Herwhimsicalness says, "Unlike the stereotypical cat, Cherish is as in love with and obsessed with us as we are her. She pets us and sleeps with us.  She follows me step by step like a shadow and cries at the door if I even go to the bathroom! She gets jealous if I'm online or the phone.  She is exceptionally vocal. She 'talks' to everyone throughout the day. Also we have to take her with us when we travel because only once we left her home for 24 hours and she lost her voice from crying for us so much.   She is unique and exotic looking. Oriental Shorthairs are unusually skinny and in our opinion breathtakingly gorgeous. So we call her our supermodel!"

LYCOS DEBUTS ALL-NEW BINGO ZONE® TO CELEBRATE GAMESVILLE’S 12TH ANNIVERSARY

Bingo Zone®, one of the web’s longest-running free bingo games, now features all-new design and real cash prizes

WALTHAM, Mass. — June 23, 2008 — Lycos, Inc., a leading provider of social publishing, media and search services, today announced "the cash is back" in a new version of an old favorite with the all-new Bingo Zone® on Gamesville.com, one of the web's premier destinations for casual, massively multi-player online games and game shows. Now in its 12th year, Gamesville is one of the web's friendliest online communities, where users meet and compete to win real cash prizes, for free.

Bingo Zone was the first game launched by Gamesville in 1996, and the web's first "free bingo game for real cash prizes." Bingo Zone uses essentially the same rules as ordinary bingo. Because Bingo Zone is advertiser-supported, it is always free to play, yet pays winners real cash. Prizes start at $1 and increase by $1 periodically until someone wins. Games last roughly six minutes, followed by a brief commercial break, and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On its opening day, more than 20 percent of Gamesville members played the new Bingo Zone.

"Bingo Zone was 'casual games' before that term ever existed," said Christopher Cummings, senior product manager for Gamesville. "A truly social online experience, Bingo Zone combines the interactivity of a game show with the popularity of social networking and the community spirit and joy that comes when friends and family win real cash."

In addition to progressive cash prizes, the new Bingo Zone now includes:

  • Fresh design with larger cards and clearer patterns for enhanced readability
  • Unique bonus game, "Dickie's Bonus Balls," played via in-game chat
  • Ability for players to select their own daubers
  • Timed commercial breaks featuring both video and display ads
Over the years, Gamesville introduced other popular games with larger jackpot prizes, like Magic 21 and Three-Eyed Bingo. However, players are particularly excited to see the Bingo Zone make its triumphant return with smaller cash prizes and a whole new look. "I love the new Bingo Zone. Thanks for bringing back our old friend, better than ever!" comments ecstatic player Fran1442 in the Gamesville Blog.

In Memoriam: George Carlin

Topic: News

Stand-up comic and satirist George Carlin passed away this weekend at the age of 71.

Carlin is probably best known for his routine on free speech, Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television, which led to a key Supreme Court ruling on obscenity. ("My name is a footnote in American legal history, which I'm perversely kind of proud of," he told The Associated Press earlier this year.)

We'll always remember Carlin for this mind-bending musing: "Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they afraid someone will clean them?"
