Christina Ricci Interview Part 2

Topic: Hollywood

Yesterday, we shared with you the first half of our conversation with Christina Ricci about her new movie "Penelope."  Here is the second half:

Q: What was it about the script that originally appealed to you?

A: It was the message and the way the message was framed and presented. [The screenwriter] uses the fairy tale structure, which we're all so familiar with, and assume we know what's coming next. But she flips it on its head, and this drives a very important message home in a way that is not preachy or patronizing or manipulative. That, to me, is great.

Q: What fairy tales or movies with messages you did you feel strongly about growing up?

A: I feel like even Disney movies had morals to teach us. I was really enamored by all of the Hans Christian Andersen books. The Ugly Duckling, I love, and the Hans Christian Andersen Little Mermaid was my favorite.

Q: This is not the first time you've taken on a role that has supernatural elements. What about that intrigues you?

A: I've always loved fantasy. I was a big sci-fi/fantasy geek when I was a teenager. I've always wanted to be in a fantasy kind of film. I am naturally sort of attracted to things that are a little bit out of this world.

Q: Do you find that your fans have your sensibilities?

I hear people say, "I know what you're doing...there's got to be something interesting about it." There couldn't be a more flattering thing to say.

Q: In the film, Penelope is chased by photographers. What do you think of all of the paparazzi and tabloids and all of the gossip sites?

One thing people don't necessarily understand about actors is that [gossip] can actually have an effect on their careers. [An actor's career] doesn't seem as real as, you know somebody's job at a big company ... but the fact is, sometimes these people, when they're really mean or really slanderous, they are hurting the way someone supports themselves or their families.

Q: Have you had experiences with paparazzi like your character?

A: I've decided that the best approach is to be friendly and nice. When there are four cars following you, I like to view us all as sort of a caravanning team. [laughs] I'll talk to them, I'll pull up and roll down my window and ask, "Is there anything specific you're out here for today? Because I'm just going to run errands." And they'll usually say, "No no no, we just want some fashion shots." But I find that if you are nice to people, they are generally nice back. Its going to happen anyway, so why allow it to drive you crazy. Unless you have something you really don't want people taking pictures of.

Christina Ricci Interview

Topic: Hollywood

In the upcoming movie "Penelope," (opening February 29) Christina Ricci stars as a young woman cursed with a porcine snout. Locked away by her parents in a mansion, the curse can only be lifted if a man takes her hand in marriage. At only 28 years old, Christina has had a fascinating career. She starred in "The Addams Family" and "The Addams Family Values" as a child actress and has grown into an accomplished actress, starring in last year's "Black Snake Moan" and the Wachowski Brothers' upcoming "Speed Racer."

We recently had the opportunity to talk to Christina where she talked about "Penelope," her relationship with the paparazzi, and what it was like to wear a pig snout.

Q: Can you tell us how long it took to put on the pig nose every day?

A: It took about an hour and a half to put the prosthetic on, and then I'd go over into regular hair and makeup and get normal beauty makeup put on over that. The only thing that got old was that I had to not talk at all while the nose was being put on my face.

Q: Did you ever wear the pig nose out in public to see what kind of reaction it got?

A: I didn't. They were trying to keep the pig nose a secret in the beginning, and ultimately decided that wasn't the best approach. Every once in awhile, we'd be on location, and I'd say, 'Why don't we walk over to Starbuck's? Oh...because I have a prosthetic pig nose on.'"

Q: Has the movie changed the way you view people at all?

A: I think in a way it has. You always fear when you're making a movie with a moral to the story that people are going to reject the idea of being taught a lesson, or you worry that people are going to feel they are being talked down to or that its cheesy to make a movie about self acceptance. But everyone seems to be really grateful, in a way, for a movie that has this theme in it...a movie that celebrates being an individual, being different.

Q: What aspects of Penelope's experience and journey will most resonate with [young women]?

A: The idea of being sort of crippled by insecurity. Women especially allow their insecurities to overwhelm them and to trap them in a way, and keep them from really enjoying life. When Penelope finally says, "I'm not going to be trapped in this house for the rest of my life and miss the world because of something wrong with my face," that's a huge moment and something we can learn from. She goes out there and experiences the world in spite of that. She accepts that her face is not going to change. A lot of women will agree that they have been in situations that should have been fun but all they could think about was the way they looked, what they were wearing, their weight...

Q: There is a period of time between the actors wrapping up their work on a film and the final film showing up in theatres.  Has this time given you any different perspective on your experience with "Penelope"?

A: To play a part, you have to sort of get lost a little bit in their emotions. I was existing in a place of a lot of self-loathing because she has to have that. At the time we were shooting, I was experiencing a lot of self-loathing as part of the character. I can now just watch it and feel good about myself and have fun watching the movie.

Q: Have you seen it with a group yet and is there feedback you've been hearing that let you know you're on the right track?

A: I've heard that we're getting tremendously positive responses. Not only does it have this message, but there is this huge romantic pay-off. I saw it in Toronto sitting next to Sam Jackson and Sam was moved. I think if the baddest man in town is moved by something, it's probably a good endorsement.

Check out part two of our interview tomorrow where Christina talks about the paparazzi, working with Reese Witherspoon, and her favorite fairy tales.

Weird Wire: A blind hole-in-one?

Topic: Weird Wire™

What do you consider the most important factors in mastering the perfect golf game?  Posture and stance?  Good follow through? ...  The ability to see?

That third factor was shockingly not at all important to Leo Fiyalko, a legally blind, 92 year old who hit a hole-in-one at Cove Cay Country Club in Florida.  From the article:

Fiyalko is 92 and has macular degeneration. He’s been golfing for 60 years, but his 110-yard shot with a five iron on Jan. 10 was his first hole-in-one.

“I was just trying to put the ball on the green,” Fiyalko said.

Wow.  Some of us have perfect vision and manage to hit the ball into the lake every single time.  Mr. Fiyalko, are you offering lessons?
