Weird Wire: Man Looted Because Of Ad

Topic: Weird Wire™

Your mother was right: If something sounds too good to be true, it very well might be.

But if an ad on an Internet site says you should rob your neighbor blind, you should really think twice.

At least, that's what poor Mr. Salisbury of Jacksonville, Oregon, would prefer you to do.

From the article:

A pair of hoax ads on Craigslist cost an Oregon man much of what he owned.

The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.

But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.

On his way home he stopped a truck loaded down with his work ladders, lawn mower and weed eater.

"I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give the stuff back," Salisbury said. "They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did."

The driver sped away after rebuking Salisbury. On his way home he spotted other cars filled with his belongings.

Once home he was greeted by close to 30 people rummaging through his barn and front porch.

The trespassers, armed with printouts of the ad, tried to brush him off. "They honestly thought that because it appeared on the Internet it was true," Salisbury said. "It boggles the mind."

Yikes. If you know someone with a new, suspiciously-obtained horse -- please let them know that items can be returned with no questions asked.

Interview: Chad Johnson

Topic: Hollywood

Cincinatti Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson is entering the realm of acting with the online and on-demand series, "The Rookie" based on Fox's hit show, "24."  We talked with Chad about "The Rookie," his charity work, and his forays into the world of gaming.

Have you always wanted to act?

Always.  Its  one of my loves.  Acting is part of what I do every Sunday and its fun. It’s going to be my second job.  I’m going to do as much of it as possible during the off season.

How is acting similar to football?

[In football], you also have to get into character and you have to love what you do.  The same thing goes with acting.  You have the script, you put yourself into character.  You play a character in a script just like you play a character on the field.

You appeared on the cover of EA's "NFL Street 3" and narrate the tutorials … are you a gamer?  Any favorites?  Any plans to do more?

Yes, if I have the time to.  My favorites are Madden, of course.

Any thoughts about a Chad Johnson reality show?

Its in the making.  I just finished filming two days ago [in Miami].

Tell us about you charity project, “Feed the Children.”

I started with two years ago.  My agent came to me with the project, I wanted to be involved in helping the kids in Africa.  Its really bad out there – I don’t think people understand.

Tell us about your character in "The Rookie."

Agent Ocho is an undercover surveillance expert.  I can’t tell you any more than that.  Go to degreerookie.com and check it out.

Weird Wire: Man Fends Off Thief With Ham

Topic: Weird Wire™

Need a good reason NOT to clean out your freezer? Well, you could always use freezer products as a means of self-defense.  A Gloucester, MA restaurant-owner, for example, recently fended off a thief with a frozen ham. From the article:

Joe Scola says he heard a noise in his Scola's Place restaurant in Gloucester, Mass., and saw a man trying to get away with his arms full of meat taken from the restaurant freezer.

The restaurant owner had a frozen ham in his hand and slammed it into the man's face, making a gash. The stunned thief dropped his loot and ran.

Wow ... the grocery store's freezer section never seemed so foreboding.

(And watch out, potential thieves, I have a bag of uneaten frozen cocktail shrimp and I know how to use it!)
